What is keyword density, and why does it matter?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears compared to the total number of words in your text. For example, if “content marketing” appears 5 times in a 500-word article, its density is about 1%. It’s a quick way to check whether you’re using a topic’s main terms enough to be relevant — without overdoing it.

There is no magic number, but modern SEO rewards natural writing. If a keyword’s density is very high (roughly 3% or more), it can read as “keyword stuffing,” which hurts readability and can be flagged by search engines. Use this checker to keep your main keywords present but comfortable, and always write for people first.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free and private?
Yes. It’s completely free with no sign-up, and all counting and keyword analysis happen locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to any server.
How is the word count calculated?
Words are counted as groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, the same way most word processors do. Characters are counted both with and without spaces, and reading time assumes an average reading speed of about 200 words per minute.
What is a good keyword density?
There’s no official target, but a natural range is often around 1–2% for a main keyword. Much higher than that can look like keyword stuffing. Focus on covering the topic clearly and using related terms rather than hitting a specific percentage.
Can I find two- and three-word phrases?
Yes. Change the Keyword length option to 2 or 3 words and the table will show your most common phrases (n-grams) instead of single words — useful for spotting the exact phrases you repeat most.
What does “Ignore common words” do?
It hides very common filler words (called stop words) like “the,” “and,” “is” and “to” from the keyword density table, so you see the words that actually carry meaning. Turn it off to include every word.
