How to calculate marks percentage

The marks percentage formula is simple: percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100. For several subjects you first add up all the marks obtained and all the maximum marks, then apply the same formula: (total obtained ÷ total maximum) × 100. For example, if you scored 425 out of 500, the percentage is (425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85%. With five subjects of 100 marks each and scores of 85, 92, 78, 88 and 90, the total obtained is 433 out of 500, which is also 86.6%.

In the Indian grading system a percentage of 60% and above is usually treated as a First Division, 45% to 59% as a Second Division, and 33% to 44% as a Third Division, while below 33% is generally a fail. Boards and universities can set their own passing marks and grades, so always check your own institution's rules. This calculator shows the division as a helpful guide only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my marks percentage?
Divide your marks obtained by the total marks and multiply by 100. For example, 425 out of 500 is (425 divided by 500) times 100, which equals 85%.
How do I find the percentage across several subjects?
Add up the marks obtained in every subject, add up the maximum marks of every subject, then divide the total obtained by the total maximum and multiply by 100. Use the multi-subject mode to do this automatically.
What percentage is First Division?
In the common Indian grading system, 60% and above is usually First Division, 45% to 59% is Second Division and 33% to 44% is Third Division. Your board or university may use different cut-offs, so check their official rules.
Can each subject have different maximum marks?
Yes. In multi-subject mode you can set a different maximum for every subject, such as 100, 80 or 50. The overall percentage uses the total obtained over the total maximum, so unequal maximums are handled correctly.
Are my marks stored anywhere?
No. The calculation runs locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded to a server, so your marks stay completely private.
