How fixed deposit interest is calculated
Fixed deposits use compound interest. The maturity amount is
A = P × (1 + r/n)n×t, where P is your deposit, r is the annual
rate (as a decimal), n is the number of times interest is compounded per year, and t is
the tenure in years. Because interest is added back to the principal each period, you earn interest on your
interest — so more frequent compounding gives a slightly higher maturity value.
Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly. Senior citizens usually get a slightly higher rate. Remember that banks deduct TDS (tax deducted at source) if your interest in a year crosses the threshold, so your in-hand amount may be a little lower than the figure shown here.
