How does image compression work?
Most photos are saved with more detail than the eye can see. Lossy formats like JPEG and WebP throw away some of that hidden detail to make the file dramatically smaller. Lowering the quality setting removes more, shrinking the file at the cost of some sharpness. WebP typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, which is why it’s great for the web. Resizing the image to a smaller width reduces the file size even more, since fewer pixels means less data.
Compressing images is one of the easiest ways to speed up a website — large images are the most common cause of slow pages. Smaller images load faster, use less bandwidth and improve your Core Web Vitals, which can help your SEO.
