What is BMI and what do the numbers mean?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure that compares your weight to your height. The formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²). For imperial units you can also use 703 × lb / in². The result places you in one of the standard WHO categories below:

BMI rangeCategory
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Normal weight
25.0 – 29.9Overweight
30.0 and aboveObese

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it is not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat or account for where fat is stored, so very muscular people can score “overweight” while having low body fat. Use BMI as a quick guide, and speak to a doctor or dietitian for a full assessment of your health.

Frequently asked questions

Is this BMI calculator free and private?
Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, and the calculation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your height, weight and other inputs are never sent to a server or stored.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI equals your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). For imperial units you can use 703 × weight(lb) / height(in)². For example, 70 kg at 175 cm gives a BMI of about 22.9.
What are the BMI categories?
Using WHO ranges: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. Obesity is further split into Class I, II and III as BMI rises.
Is BMI accurate for athletes and muscular people?
Not always. BMI only uses height and weight, so it cannot tell muscle from fat. Very muscular or athletic people may have a high BMI while carrying little body fat, so for them BMI should be read alongside other measures such as body-fat percentage or waist size.
What is a healthy BMI and weight for my height?
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults. After you calculate, the tool shows the healthy weight range for your exact height — the lower limit is 18.5 times your height in metres squared and the upper limit is about 24.9 times it.
