It’s free, works in any currency, and runs entirely in your browser.

How to use the tip calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount and choose your currency symbol.
  2. Pick a tip percentage from the presets (5/10/15/18/20%) or type a custom value.
  3. Set the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. Optionally turn on Round up total for an even, easy-to-pay figure.
  5. Read off the tip amount, total bill and per-person amount from the result cards.

How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary a lot by country. In the United States, 15–20% of the bill is standard for restaurant service, with 18–20% seen as generous. In the UK and much of Europe a service charge is often already added, so an extra 5–10% is plenty when it isn’t. In India, restaurants frequently add a service charge too, and a 5–10% tip is common when you want to reward good service. When in doubt, round to a comfortable number.

When you split a bill, the fairest approach is usually to divide the total (bill plus tip) equally between everyone, which is what the per-person card shows here. If your group ordered very differently, you may prefer to split only the tip evenly and have each person cover their own items. There is also the pre-tax versus post-tax question: many people tip on the pre-tax amount, but tipping on the full post-tax total is also common and only adds a little. This calculator works on whatever bill figure you enter, so use the pre-tax or post-tax total depending on your preference.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. For example, a 15% tip on a 1000 bill is 1000 x 15 / 100 = 150. This calculator does it for you and also adds the tip to the bill and splits it between people.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
It depends on the country. In the US, 15 to 20 percent is standard. In the UK, Europe and India a service charge is often already included, so an extra 5 to 10 percent is usually enough when one is not added.
How does splitting the bill work?
The calculator divides the total bill, including the tip, equally by the number of people. The per-person card shows each share and the tip-per-person card shows how much of that is tip.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both are common. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, while others tip on the full post-tax total, which only adds a little more. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount and the calculator handles the rest.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The calculation runs locally in your browser. Your bill, tip and split details are never uploaded to a server.
