What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled, meaningless Latin-looking text that has been the printing and typesetting industry’s standard placeholder copy for centuries. The point of placeholder text is to show how a layout looks with content in it without distracting the viewer with real, readable words. When people see actual sentences they start reading and judging the writing; filler text keeps the focus on the visual design — spacing, font choice, line length and hierarchy.
The familiar passage, which begins “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…”, is not random gibberish. It is derived from a work by the Roman writer Cicero written in 45 BC, with words altered, added and removed so it no longer makes proper sense. It spread when an early typesetter scrambled the text to make a specimen book, and it later became a staple of design software and web templates. Because it uses a natural-looking distribution of short and long words, it mimics the rhythm of real language far better than simply repeating a single word.
