How to calculate marks percentage
The marks percentage formula is simple: percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100.
For several subjects you first add up all the marks obtained and all the maximum marks, then apply the same formula:
(total obtained ÷ total maximum) × 100. For example, if you scored 425 out of 500, the
percentage is (425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85%. With five subjects of 100 marks each and scores of
85, 92, 78, 88 and 90, the total obtained is 433 out of 500, which is also 86.6%.
In the Indian grading system a percentage of 60% and above is usually treated as a First Division, 45% to 59% as a Second Division, and 33% to 44% as a Third Division, while below 33% is generally a fail. Boards and universities can set their own passing marks and grades, so always check your own institution's rules. This calculator shows the division as a helpful guide only.
